Investor relations, much like public relations, is a department in a public company which is required to effectively communicate the company's affairs to the investors. It differs from public relations in the way that investor relations are only responsible to manage the communication channel between the company, its investors and its financial community and not the general public or clients. 

The information provided by investor relations is accurate and credible so that it helps investors to make an informed decision before deciding to invest in a company. A person who works for the investor relations department is required to have effective communication skills both written and verbal. Additionally, they also need to have a strong understanding of financial terms, reports and tools and software. 

Apart from these, the basic knowledge of MS office is needed with a proficiency in MS-Excel. As the investor relations department needs to process large amounts of financial data, knowledge of financial calculators and ERP software that the company uses.

• It also coordinates and sets up meetings with shareholders and government institutions.
